2015 State Rally
The 2015 State Rally was an amazing camp for my Awesome Sauce Patrol to attend. It was a jam packed weekend with so many activities to take part in. From making campfires to tying knots, and who could forget the compass points we had to find in the bush while trying to avoid the zombies jumping out at us from around every corner. During each activity my patrol worked together, helping each other complete the task set for us. Many skills were learnt and many laughs were shared, like the time our shelter made out of anything we could find in the bush almost collapsed on our heads.
When all the activities were done and the sun was down we gathered around the campfire. As we ate our meals we made many new friends. We all had a great time at the disco and didn’t want to leave when it ended.
My patrol was very happy when our great skills had paid off; we came first (out of the two patrols) in the Guides region. It was a great camp and we hope to see some more Guides step up for some competition next time.
Thank you to the Scouts for letting us attend this great camp and a big thanks to all the leaders who organised the camp, ran the activities, put up with our late noisy nights and everyone who assisted along the way. We hope to see you next year!

What does happiness mean to you?
To many of our Girl Guides, happiness this year was another Kirrawee Gang Show season! Gang Shows are an integral part of the Girl Guide Australia and Scouts Australia movements, allowing people of all ages to experience six months of life on the stage, and gain confidence through creative expression. In 2015, nine Girl Guide units were represented on the KGS stage, with many more involved behind the scenes working hard to make the production a reality. Being a ‘part of the Gang’ required girls to dedicate their Sundays to rehearsals, and even spend whole weekends refining the show! All of the time and effort they put in was rewarded with great performances and exceptional reviews, but most importantly the friendships they have developed and will keep for life. I\’m sure these girls will be first to sign up for the 2017 Kirrawee Gang Show – will you be there?

Kurnell Guides make Super Bubbles!
Recently, Kurnell Guides had great fun making super bubbles. They have shared some photos and the instructions below.
Equipment per girl: 90cm of string, 2 plastic drinking straws, tablespoon, measuring cup, large plastic mixing jug, bubble mixture (125 mls concentrated dishwashing liquid, 1500 mls water, 1/2 cup cornflour, 1 tablespoon baking powder, 1 tablespoon glycerine)
Preparation: Dissolve the cornflour in the water, stirring really well. Then gently stir in the remaining ingredients. Avoid creating a lot of froth. Allow your mixture to sit for at least an hour, stirring occasionally if you see the cornflour settling to the bottom.
What to do:
- Thread the sting through the two drinking straws and tie the ends together.
- Pour the bubble mix into the baking pan.
- Wetting fingers first, hold one straw in each hand and dip the strings and straws into the mixture for a few seconds.
- Remove the strings from the mixtures and pull the straws apart so that the strings are taut.
- Holding the straws as though they are a frame, wave them around several times.
- Then pull the straws upward and bring them close together.
The more bubbles you make, the better the mixture gets!
The first several bubbles will pop immediately, but the more you play with the mixture, the silkier it gets and then you will be creating HUGE bubbles. Some will lift off, and float away. You need to find your groove – arms high and walking backwards worked best for some. When they get the hang of it, the bubbles can escape. You don’t even need straws hands work fine and you can even catch them.
2nd Mortdale Girl Guides attend Scout State Rally
On 2-4 of August Josie, Meg, Kate and I went to the NSW Scout Rally. This is a weekend long lightweight camp where you pack all your own food, clothing, tent, cooking utensils and supplies.
I was the patrol leader, and Kate was our second. We arrived on Friday night, and registered, which included weighing our packs to ensure we were not carrying too much weight. As the weekend progressed, we moved from one activity centre to the next, completing a minimum of four activities per centre. Some of the activities we attempted were: tying and throwing a lasso, inventing a new food from basic ingredients, Chinese whisper Lego construction, and obstacle courses (lots of obstacle courses).
Many cargo nets were conquered, food was eaten (and we had heaps left over), milo was drunk, and a good time was had by all. Bobbin, MooMoo and Georgette, our unit’s mascots, enjoyed themselves. We received a special award at the closing ceremony, Region Champion for the “Guide” region (we were the only guide group after all). Overall, we came 67th out of 184 scout (and guide) patrols in NSW attending.
We would all like to thank the Scouts for allowing us to come, and for the special mention. We would also like to thank all of the leaders who ran all the activity centres. Next year it would be great to have some competition for the best in the “Guide” region.

Guides participate in Council Citizenship Ceremony
On Friday 19 April, three Guides from 2nd Menai Guide Unit participated in the Sutherland Shire Council’s Citizenship Ceremony. The girls acted as the colour party for the event and after the ceremony, had their photo taken with the Mayor.
