What is Guiding?
Our Mission: To help girls and young women grow into confident, self-respecting, responsible community
members.
As your daughter joins Guides Australia, she becomes a member of the world guide community, with approximately ten million members in 144 countries. Guiding around the world encourages girls and young women to
become community leaders.
Guiding offers a balanced, broad-spectrum informal learning program for today's girls and young women. It is quite
different from single-interest clubs and organisations.
Guiding is an values-based organisation, which provides a non-denominational program based on our Promise and Law.
By encouraging each girl to achieve her own personal best, in a non-competitive environment, Guides
offers a recipe for personal success, and the ability to make choices. She can learn to shape her own
future.
Skills learned in guiding help young women to succeed in an increasingly competitive work
force.
What is the Cost?
Guiding is affordable by most and represents great value for money. As with most recreational
pursuits there are some initial costs such as uniform and joining fees. Annual membership fees ($72 in
2005) cover the costs of administration and insurance. By paying this membership fee, you ensure that
your daughter is covered by insurance for all Guiding events and your daughter will receive her own
membership card and number. Weekly or Term fees are levied by each Unit to cover the cost of Unit resources. Donations are always welcome and donations over $2 are tax-deductable - ask your daughter's Leader or the Support Group about this.
Who are the Leaders?
Leaders are specially trained volunteers who enjoy sharing their time and skills with young
people. The guide leadership training helps them to understand the particular needs of girls. They learn to meet the
challenge of "leading from behind" as the girls choose activities and design their program.
Guide leaders come from all parts of the community.
What is the Promise?
Your daughter will be required to make the following Promise to become a member.
|
I promise that I will do my best:
To do my duty to God, to serve the Queen and my country,
To help other people, and
To keep the Guide Law.
|
What is the Guide Law?
- A guide is loyal and can be trusted
- A Guide is helpful
- A Guide is polite and considerate
- A Guide is friendly and a sister to all Guides
- A Guide is kind to animals and respects all living things.
- A Guide is obedient.
- A Guide has courage and is cheerful in all difficulties.
- A Guide makes good use of her time.
- A Guide takes care of her own possessions and those of other people.
- A Guide is self-controlled in all she thinks, says and does.
What is the Uniform?
Generally, your daughter will wear her formal uniform for the first time when she makes her Promise. It
comprises:
|
Top half
|
Light Blue shirt (or optional white shirt for Ranger Guides)
Navy jacket, jumper, sweater, etc.
|
|
Bottom half
|
Navy item of clothing (skirt, culottes, trousers)
|
|
Outdoor wear
|
Navy hat
|
|
Optional Accessories
|
Belt, scarf, sash (ask your daughter's Leader what is common in her Unit)
|
Your daughter's Unit may also choose to wear from a range of items of informal uniform, to be worn by the
members of her Unit for selected occasions or events. Ask your daughter's Leader for details.
Uniform items may be purchased from the Region
Shop.
Ask your daughter's Leader if there is a Unit or District clothing pool.
What is the Support Group or District Support
Team?
The Support Group is a group of parents and interested people which provides practical and financial support to the Units and
Leaders. Practical support includes maintaining the guide hall, assisting with badge assessing, providing
occasional transport or helping at camps. Support Group people are essential in supporting roles, but they
are not actively involved with running the Unit. All parents are encouraged to join the Support Group and to
attend meetings.
