HAPPY BIRTHDAY SHORTLAND TREFOIL GUILD.
We turn 24 on the 27th October 2005 and will be celebrating with dinner in September at a new restaurant in Kirrawee. We will will celebrating our birthday early, as this year we will be having our Christmas celebration on October. Yes, that's early BUT it's gives us more time to enjoy other Christmas celebrations that are held throughout November and December.
In the past few months we have been collecting donations for the people of Manam Island. Manam Island is off the north east coast of Papua New Guinea and in January there was volcanic activity and the island was immediatly evacuated. Now 10,000 islanders from 18 villages are living under tarpulins on private land on Papua New Guinea and need our help. Due the the private land they may not use the vegatation to builds huts, grow crops or fish the waters off the private beach. Children over the age of 8 are walking shoeless 20km to school and 20 km home again. Due to the ongoing volcanic activity, villagers are unlikely ever to be able to return to their homes. Items that we have been collecting are household and cooking items, shoes, clothing, tents, teddy-bears, water bottles, exercise books and pencils for the school children, bedspreads, curtains, tea towels, mosquito nets, buttons, cotton, elastic, scissors, games, balls, soap etc. and unfortunately the Papua New Guinea government are not supporting them. We are supporting Hornsby Waitara Trefoil Guild with this. This is an ongoing support, so any help from the region will be much appreciated.
We've also been knitting squares for 'Wraps with Love'. These squares should be 10' x 10' (about 50 stiches across) on 8 inch needles with 8 ply wool. And bright, happy colours. The stitch needs also to be plain stitch. Happy knitting ladies!
